‘Work is a Four Letter Word’, is a solo exhibition of textile works, painting and sculpture by British artist Des Hughes, held at St Peter’s Church in Redlynch, Bruton.
In this body of work, Hughes explores how casual and subconscious mark-making can be made permanent, both drawn and sculpted, while retaining the immediacy and charm of their first attempt. In this process, Hughes engages with notions of work and labour, utilising humour to critique various forms of visual communication around these themes as well as further ones of faith, grief and healing. His works are thoughtfully placed in relation to the Grade II listed church’s interior and architecture.
